Chennai city has got 4 water reservoirs for supplying water for the residents and the fifth reservoir is coming up at Thervoy Kandigai in Tiruvallur district is known. This fifth reservoir has got a capacity to store one million cubic feet of water and it would supply an additional 65 MLD to Chennai.
It was about 5 years back this fifth water reservoir was first started after the state government allocated an amount of Rs 380 crores. Truth is the work has been stuttering. It was expected to be completed in 2019 itself as per the last schedule. The northeast monsoon has caused the delay in the completion.
An official belongs to WRD spoke about how Thervoy Kandigal reservoir was delayed for almost 5 years and how land acquisition plus northeast monsoon were responsible for the delay. He was hopeful that the remaining 10 % work would be completed by next month. The local residents were not happy with the compensation paid to them in the land acquiring process of the government. It is known that the residents refused to vacate and filed a petition in the High Court.
It was later revealed by an official that out of total money that was sanctioned for the project Rs 160 crores was spent on resettling those whose lands were acquired for it. The remaining amount was only spent for the sake of the fifth water reservoir. Two lakes at Kannankottai and Thervoy Kandigai villages in Tiruvallur were combined to create a reservoir.
