Restoration works of Madambakkam Lake to begin from April

Madambakkam Lake is spread across of 250 acres is known fact. Rotary Club of Madras, a NGO, has been given permission to restore this Madambakkam Lake now.

The president of Rotary Club of Madras, Vijaya Rangarajan, spoke about how they have started the restoration work in the year 2018 and completed the restoration works of 2 lakes in places like Tambaram and Sholinganallur. 

It is important to note that these lakes were rain fed lakes and the restoration works have benefited more than 5000 people in the localities. Another rain fed lake is this Madambakkam Lake and it has got a capacity of 50 million cubic feet of water. Beginning from April, the restoration work on this lake would begin and it would be over in 10 months of time. After the restoration of Madambakkam Lake, more than 2 lakh people in the area would be benefited.

In the past, Rotary Club of Madras played a crucial role in the restoration of Puducherry Keni Lake in Sholinganallur. This lake is spread across 10 acres is known. In Tambaram, across 60 acres is present Puduthangal Lake and this NGO was involved in the restoration of this lake too. The water holding capacity of these lakes has increased from 2.83 million cubic feet to 3.83 million cubic feet.

Various restoration works carried are rapid assessment of hydrological character of soil and water, volumetric survey of water, silt and determining the water flow etc. There is garbage and sewage present in the lakes and the restoration work also involves clearing of these from the water body.
