For our body to function well we must consume all the nutrients without fail and these nutrients must be taken in some specific amounts. Iron is one important nutrient needed for the body to function well.
Recommended dietary allowance or RDA for iron is 18 mg (in women between 19 and 50) and 8 mg (for men between 19 and 50) and 27 mg for pregnant women. This is according Food and Nutrient Board.
It is important to mention that when the iron inside us is present in normal level then all the cells function well and blood is produced in required amount. There are times when we consume iron in excess quantities and it is not good because we could get various health issues.
Various health issues we could get by excess intake of iron are
Iron toxicity:
It must be noted that excess intake of iron could lead to iron toxicity in us. Here, iron gets accumulated in our liver, brain etc and finally damage them. Various signs of iron toxicity are stomach pain, nausea, vomiting etc.
Colon cancer:
Many these days get affected by colon cancer are known. Excess iron intake could also be a reason for the cause of colon cancer. It could be due to uncontrolled Fenton reaction in the presence of excess iron. As a result, instability and mutation are promoted leading to colon cancer.
Diabetes:
A person could get diabetes easily if he or she has high levels of dietary iron. It is worth mentioning here that when iron count rise in us then insulin resistance and beta cell failure etc occur leading to diabetes.
Heart failure:
Cardiac hemochromatosis takes place due to excess of iron in the body. Here, organ toxicity and dysfunction takes place due to excess iron. Finally we could get congestive heart failure and irregular heart beat.
