Maha Sivarathri festival at Chennai Vadapalani Lord Murugan temple!

On the sacred occasion of Maha Sivarathri, special 4-period Poojas, devotional music programmes, etc., are being organised at the famous Chennai Vadapalani Lord Murugan Temple.

There are many Sivarathris in a year when penance can be observed praying Lord Siva known as Madha, Nithya, Yoga, and Maha Sivarathris!

The classic literature and epics inform that Maha Sivarathri is the most sacred.

Maha Sivarathri is celebrated in the Tamil calendar month of Masi, in the diminishing fortnight of the moon (known as `theipirai’ in Tamil) when the day of Sathurthasi occurs.

The word ‘rathri’ means that all things becoming inactive, the things and living creatures think and pray of Lord Siva. It is a tradition to perform a 4-period Pooja on this sacred day.

In the Chennai Vadapalani Lord Murugan temple, on the occasion of Mahasivarathri, from the ‘Pradosham period today evening (Friday, 21st February) at 4.30 PM until throughout the night and special prayers are performed on Lord Sokkanathar during 4 periods.

The 1st period is at 8.30 PM, the 2nd at 11.00 PM, 3rd at 1.00 AM and the 4th at 3.00 AM when special Abhishekhams will be performed.

During each Abhishekham period, Rudraparayanam will be chanted. Followed by Bhajan.

At 8.30 PM, ‘Siva Mahimai Veda Ghosham by Bhuvaneswari Srinivasan and ‘Veenai Parayanam’ are performed. At 11.00 PM, devotional music by Abhishekh Raju (son of Veeramani Raju) is programmed.
