One of the oldest universities in India is University of Madras or MU. This MU has been providing many graduate as well as PG courses in various subjects is well known to us.
From the year 2020, MU would be launching a new and exclusive practical course on ‘Mud Logging and Petroleum Geology’ for the students. The truth is this course would have collaboration with Geolog International of Amsterdam. The main objective behind launching this course is to boost industry- academia collaboration.
The important point is mud logging is creation of a detailed record of a borehole by examining the cuttings of the rock brought to the surface by circulating mud. Petroleum exploration utilizes this mud logging. In addition to this, the drilling of water wells plus mineral exploration also uses this mud logging.
It is known that Geolog International is one of the largest mud-logging companies present. This Geolog International works with many petroleum based companies all over the world.
A state-of-art Petroleum Geology Training Lab would be set up at the Guindy campus of MU in Chennai and as a part of collaboration, MU has executed a 5 year MoU with Geolog. The students joining the course would be given superb training. This was revealed by Mr. Sivakumar Thangamani, operation manager of Geolog International and alumni of MU. The space and training staff would be provided by MU whereas the Geolog would provide materials as well as equipments. It is now said that the Applied Geology department post graduate students would be using this laboratory.
