More persons than expected came to buy vegetables in Chennai on Sunday and this led to the increase in the prices of the vegetables at Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex or KWMC.
It was expected that the complete lock down in Chennai would result in less footfall in Koyambedu market but the opposite took place on Sunday. It must be noted that the market authorities had reduced stock arrivals from farmers by one-third. The number of supply trucks reduced to 150 that was 100 lesser than the other days in the lock down period of time. This was as per some sources belonging to Koyambedu market.
Mr. Chandran, secretary of the Federation of Wholesale Vegetable Market Association, pointed out that traders at the market expected less crowd and the supply of veggies was reduced at the market. He added that the traders were surprised to see huge crowds at this market complex on Sunday and it led to increase in the rates of vegetables.
The market just received 150 bags of carrot on Sunday and this was below the 2000 bags the market received on Saturday. This was also the similar for veggies like tomato etc. The prices of other veggies like yam, potato and beans etc were same.
