Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has announced hostel facilities for backward communities. Speaking at the Assembly on Thursday, she said that 10 new hostels will be constructed for students of de-notified tribes and minorities, backward classes and most backward classes.
‘Students of backward classes would get five new hostels, the most backward classes three hostels and one each for de-notified and minority students. Thenew hostels, to be built at a cost of Rs 2.50 crore, could accommodate 1000 students… The government would construct new buildings for 68 hostels at a cost of Rs. 86.97 crore. These hostels were at present functioning from private buildings. Of the total, 47 hostels could accommodate 100 students and the remaining 21 would accommodate 50 students. These new hostels would have solar-powered water heating system and solar power photovoltaic power plant, which would be installed by the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency’, she said.
