Lawyers of the Sterlite copper smelting plant in Tuticorin urged the Bench to stay the order to close the facility in the wake of reports submitted by the Southern Bench of NGT claiming that there was nothing wrong. The expert committee that investigated the plant said that the stack and ambient air quality levels in and around the plant were normal.
The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) counsel said that since there have been reported leakages in the past, the plant should remain closed.
