University for music and fine arts

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa announced that a separate university will be established for music and fine arts in Tamil Nadu. This university would have thirteen departments which are vocal, veena, violin, nadaswaram, thavil, mridangam, ghatam, kanjira, morsing, flute, bharatanatyam, nattuvangam and folk arts.

The university would have under its wing all government aided and private colleges that teach fine arts, dance and music. This would include the government music colleges that already exist at Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Tiruvaiyaru, the government fine arts colleges at Kumbakonam and Chennai and also Mammallapuram’s Government College of Architecture and Sculpture.
