Ranganathan Street with many shops is highly popular place in southern Chennai. Many visit this place to buy things and this results in heavy crowds often is known.
The shops located in Ranganathan Street do not follow social distancing norm that was needed to contain Corona virus. The GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has now ordered the shops here to be shut down until further orders.
It was later highlighted by an officer belonging to the Chennai Corporation that the move to close down all the shops has been taken as the shops failed to follow social distancing norms. He added that the decision to close down all the shops was taken as a preventive measure.
It must not be forgotten that initially the corporation officials wanted to seal the entire Ranganathan Street but later the shop owners promised to close the shops on Saturday. This made the officials to come back without sealing the Ranganathan Street.
More than 150 shops are present in this Ranganathan Street and if any of these shops remained opened on Saturday then the shop would be sealed. This was as per an official. For violating social distancing norms, the Chennai Corporation had sealed as many as 1000 shops in Chennai. This has been done since the first day of the lock down in Chennai.
It must be noted that the shops sealed for violating the norms would be allowed to reopen only after 3 months of time. After the lock down restrictions was relaxed, GCC gave permission for several shops to function.
