The Mettur reservoir will not be opened as per schedule this year. Normally, the water from the reservoir is released on June 12th for irrigational purposes. The reason is that the reservoir has only 12 per cent of its full capacity.
The four reservoirs that hold Cauvery water in Karnataka, and supplies water to Mettur have a combined capacity of 14.83 thousand million cubic feet (tmcf) where their normal capacity is 114.45 tmcft. The four reservoirs are Harangi, Hemavathi, Krishnarajasagar and Kabini.
‘Nothing different (from previous regimes) can be expected from the Siddharamaiah government. We only hope the newly set up supervisory panel, led by the secretary of the Union water resources ministry, meets before this month-end to finalise the water release’, said an official.
