The Chennai Corporation has proposed to build two pedestrian foot bridges one across EVR Periyar Salai and the other in T. Nagar. However, the proposal has brought under the magnifying glass the state of existing pedestrian over bridges in the city. There are currently 32 bridges out of which 27 are in such a bad state that people do not even want to use them.
The bridge in Perungudi is covered with cigarette butts, broken bottles and other trash. ‘Commuters
cross the road because nobody wants to risk using the over-bridge. The bridge becomes a hub of anti-social elements at night’, says a resident of Saidapet.
