A survey has shown that Chennai has the most number of working women when compared to the four main metropolitan cities in the country. 20% of Chennai’s women earn a living. Mumbai is second at 19%, Kolkata at 18% and Delhi at 11%. Security and safety are the key factors that contribute to this number. Other factors are its conservative and traditional mind set coupled with the ability to adjust to global trends.
‘Tamil Nadu is often mistaken as a conservative society in terms of social attitudes to women`s attire and their conduct, but in the matter of education and career, women have lately been given more licence… Another reason for the rise in women`s is the kind of education they typically pursue here, with professional courses related to IT, computer science and analytics taking precedence over the humanities’, says a city based sociologist.
