The government is planning to remove the verdict on the imprisonment for minor offences such as ticket-less travel in trains and begging, etc and remove the concerned clauses.

The central government has planned to introduce the only penalty as the punishment for ticket-less travel in trains.

The concerned ministry has asked for identifying the various clauses which accord imprisonment to remove them and change the clauses only for the payment of a penalty in various avenues.

In India, there is a prevailing arrangement of penalty or imprisonment or both for even minor offences.

It has been a very long-felt observation that this is a maximum level of punishment. In this regard, the central government has planned to pay only the penalty for these minor offences.

As per the Railway Act, travelling without ticket in trains or begging or travelling on the foot-board entail penalty, imprisonment, or both!

Further, the Ministry of Railways has identified that the punishment of imprisonment to be removed for offences such as pulling the emergency chain without any reason to stop the train, or disturbing the public, etc., including such 16 minor offences.
