It is now brought out by the Directorate of Government Examinations or DGE that irrespective of the marks scored in the quarterly and half yearly examinations all students of class 10 would be promoted to class 11. Some days back the government had announced that public examinations for the students of class 10 would be cancelled.
The order from the government revealed that the marks for students of class 10 would be calculated giving 80% weightage marks scored in the quarterly and half yearly examinations and 20% to attendance.
On Friday, the DGE sent letters to all the chief educational officers and it was mentioned in the latter that while the earlier order explained how marks would be calculated it had also made it clear that students would be considered promoted n matter the marks they had scored in their quarterly and half yearly examinations. It was also pointed out the letter that the same would be applicable for those class 11 students for subjects for which exams could not be considered.
It is worthy to note that the TN Graduate Teachers Federation had expressed concerns over allegations regarding many private schools not maintaining proper records of both quarterly and half yearly examinations and they were manipulating them.
General Secretary of TNGTF, Mr. Patrick Raymond was unhappy regarding the calculation of marks based on the marks scored in the quarterly and half yearly exams and said it was not a good idea.
He threw light on the change of syllabus in 2019 and students were bound to score low marks in the mid- term exams. Instead of awarding marks, grades must be given to the students belonging to class 10 and this was according to the association.
Appeal has been made by the TN Teachers Association to the TN government to award grades to the class 10 students instead of marks.
