There has been significant reduction in the number of containment zones in the Chennai city. The number of containment zones in places like Tambaram and its nearby suburbs has increased now.
While the rest of the Chennai city had just 64 containment zones, Tambaram itself has got as many as 76 containment zones. Just 4 weeks back, Tambaram had just 18 containment zones and Chennai had 369 containment zones. There were 28 barricaded streets in Pallavaram, another southern suburb in the last month but now it has got less number of barricaded streets. More independent houses were sealed in June and this was as per some officials belonging to the municipality.
Pallavaram revenue official spoke about how the protocol has changed now. He explained that only those streets that have 20 positive contacts or 5 primary cases would be announced as a containment zone. Buildings that have positive cases get sealed. It is known that both Pallavaram as well as Tambaram fall under Chengalpet district.
It was later mentioned by Mr. T. Udhayachandran, IAS officer deputed to monitor Covid-19 efforts in Chengalpet that the best way to reduce Coronavirus cases in the congested areas was to cut off the entire stretch rather than sealing the houses. After assessing the conditions, the local authorities have been allowed to take a decision.
It was pointed out by a revenue officer belonging to Tambaram that Coronavirus cases have been increasing and efforts were being taken to control the spread. Restricting movement in Tambaram has been difficult as it is the entry point of Chennai.
