At the temporary wholesale market in Madhavaram in Chennai, the prices of mangoes or king of fruits have doubled almost and the arrival of mangoes has stopped.
Information collected is that the market has been receiving just one-fourth of the different types of mangoes like Banganapalli, Romania, and Bangalora than the normal. On the other hand, the price of mosambi has gone down as the trucks meant for other parts of TN were diverted to Chennai.
Just last week, one kg of mangoes was sold at Rs 50 to Rs 60 and now the prices have increased and the mangoes are sold for Rs 80 to Rs 100 per kg. Previously, the wholesale market at Madhavaram received up to 60 tonnes of mangoes from AP and from Tiruvallur district. At present, the supply of mangoes has reduced to just 10 to 15 tonnes.
It was later pointed out by Mr. S. Srinivasan, president of the Chennai Fruits Commission Agents Association that the prices have shot up in just 2 days. The mango season is now coming to an end and this has led to a reduction in the mango arrivals. Hence, the prices of mangoes have increased.
He threw light on how the neighboring markets sell fruits by hiking the rates by 20 percent. He then mentioned that every day 400 tonnes of fruits have been received and out of that 100 tonnes belongs to mosambi itself. It must be noted that one kg of mosambi is sold for Rs 25 to Rs 40.
