In the months of April, May, and June, Chennai city and its neighboring places saw more Coronavirus positive cases whereas other faraway districts of TN did not have that many positive cases. Now, this has turned completely.
In the districts belonging to TN, a new wave has been spreading like fire. The people in these places are now hoping that they would be protected from the Coronavirus infection as they are away from urban places.
There are as many as 2858 Coronavirus positive cases in Madurai and the doubling time (time it takes for the Coronavirus positive cases to double) is down to just 5 days. In districts like Vellore and Ramanathapuram, the doubling time is just 6 days just like the other 12 districts.
In Chennai and Chengalpet districts, the doubling time is 17 days and 16 days in the Tiruvallur district. The doubling time is 14 days for TN as a whole.
Districts like Tiruvannamalai with more than 2000 Coronavirus positive cases had got a doubling time of 16 days and Tuticorin with 1000 cases had got doubling time of 18 days. Doubling time in Karur was 48 days whereas in Namakkal it was 44 days.
Senior virologist Dr. Jacob John compared this current pattern with that of 1957 Asian flu and 2009 H1N1 pandemic and said that the current pattern was not new. Urban areas got affected first and then the rural areas got affected later and the same trend is now present in Covid-19 also.
In many districts in TN, by the end of June month, the positive rate (proportion of those infected among those tested) increased up to 10 % points. Fewer restrictions in the districts were the cause for more number of Coronavirus positive cases and this was as per Dr. Prabhdeep Kaur, director of NIE.
