The schools in TN were closed to control Coronavirus infection pandemic and they haven’t reopened yet. There is still no clarity when the schools across TN would reopen.

To look into the academic loss and to compensate it for the students, an expert committee was formed. This expert committee would submit the report to the TN government in a few days of time.

Truth is schools in TN have lost more than 1 month in the previous academic year and in this academic year they have lost almost 2 months.

Led by the School Education Commissioner Sigy Thomas Vaidhyan, the School Education Department had constituted 18 member committee comprising of Director of School Education, Elementary Education, Examination, matriculation Schools, representatives of Parent teachers association, UNICEF and IIT-Madras as members to prepare a detailed recommendation of how to compensate for the loss of academic session.

The panel has worked out a comprehensive plan including reduction of 30% of syllabus for the students from classes 1 to 12 as per the needs. This was according to a senior officer from the Directorate of School Education.

The committee members have carefully gone through the syllabus of all standards and have recommended omissions. He explained about how the committee in recommendation also recommended the cancellation of quarterly examinations if the schools reopened by the month of August/September.

Every year, in the month of September, the quarterly examinations with common question papers were conducted across TN schools. Once when the school gets re-opened then there would be a rotation classroom schedule for the students until normalcy comes back.

The committee members have made various suggestions like opening schools on all Saturdays, extension of academic session by about 1 month plus declaration of school holidays only for important purposes etc. It has been revealed now that while declaring the new academic schedule all precautionary measures would be adopted.
