Cargo piles up at airport

A meeting that comprised of the representatives of field staff at the Cargo hold of the Airport, the Customs House Agents (CHA) , AAI (Airports Authority of India) officials and customs officials was held in the wake of the strike by the CHA. Sources say that the officials have promised to make improvements to the existing system of clearing cargo and have asked the staff to go back to work.
The in bound cargo at the airport piled up over the weekend as no one was working to clearing it. The backlog was reported to be almost 400 tonnes. ‘The poor operational efficiency of Bhadra International, the private firm in charge of cargo operations,had taken its toll on the cargo clearing to their clients. It takes a day or two for clearing, but now it has been prolonged to 4-5 days based on the consignment contents’, said a field staff member.
