The state of Tamil Nadu is bracing for one more lockdown in the month of August.
It is now mentioned that the chief minister of TN, Mr. E. Palaniswami would take decisions regarding the operation of both intra-district as well as inter district buses (for a month the bus operations were suspended) after the meeting on Wednesday and Thursday with district collectors and health inspectors. It was brought out by some sources that the TN government would move forward slowly and steadily in this regard and they would opt for a cautious and measured approach.
On 30th June 2020, the previous lockdown ended and at that time there were as many as 38,889 active cases. On Monday, 27th July 2020 there were as many as57073 active Coronavirus cases. There would be intra-district and inter-district bus operations in TN except in the city of Chennai. After the chief minister’s meeting on 30th July, a decision about public bus transport would be taken. This was as per some sources.
Information is a zonal system for transport where the districts are divided into zones for the movement of buses might be resumed. From 1st June, TN government resumed public transport with 50% occupancy and after 3 weeks the bus services were suspended as the Coronavirus cases increased and identifying the contacts became difficult. The resumption of bus services took place after the state was divided into 8 zones.
At present, the demand for the bus services has increased as more business has been started in the non-containment areas. It was later mentioned by another official that the government must not be in a hurry to open up as it might lead to spurt in the cases. Point is that the inter-state transport was not on the cards and educational institutes, shopping malls and theatres would not be opened.
