In the future, if we go around places like Vysarpadi and Anna Nagar etc in Chennai then we might come across urban forests with small herbs, flowering plants, shrubs, and canopy trees, etc. Truth is Chennai would get 8 acres of the urban forest in the next one year of time.

It is important to mention that 32 green lungs covering half an acre have been completed already. This has been as per some officials belonging to GCC. Leveling of lands near V.R. MAHAL in Anna Nagar and in Vyasarpadi has been going on.

Mr. Sridhar, regional deputy commissioner central region highlighted that initially there were plans to remove invasive spaces and create a dense forest that could act as lung space. Land availability was brought to light by Mr. Sridhar.

He explained how GCC had plans to create one forest in every zone. Small herbs, flowering plants, canopy trees, etc would be present in the dense forest and there would be as many as 40 different species.

These would be taken care of by some ward officers, NGOs and residential welfare associations. The fact is the biodegradable solid waste generated would be used as manure for the forests.

Out of 426 sq km, just 64 sq km had vegetation and this was revealed by a study that was conducted by GCC in the year 2018. For this study, GCC had associated with the biodiversity organization Care Earth.

Information collected is Chennai Corporation would plant around 2 lakh saplings and 23000 saplings planted along the roadsides/open reserved sites in 2019. Creating urban forests in all the 15 zones of GCC would be carried out as per the orders of the Chennai Corporation commissioner Mr. G. Prakash.

The good news is the completion of forest in Alandur zone is nearing completion and this was brought out by Mr. Alby John, regional deputy commissioner, south.
