Walkalators in Chennai airport

In a first for India, Chennai will soon get walkalators at the airport, which will connect the domestic terminal, international terminal and metro station.

Speaking about this, Executive Director of the AAI (Airports Authority of India) S. Bhaduri said, ‘Tenders would be floated for the project in 10 days. It will be the first time in the country that we will have walkalators for an airport.  They will not only help air passengers get from one terminal to another, but  also enable those getting off at the metro rail station to get directly to the departure entrances of both  terminals… 24 walkalators, each measuring 33 metres will be installed in both directions to cover about 600 metres. Besides the introduction of walkalators , the second phase  of airport expansion would see installation of surveillance cameras,  air conditioning and fire -fighting devices…  We will make sure the work on walkalators and glass tube  keeps pace with the completion of the metro rail station, which is expected to be operational by early 2014… The CMRL will then have to complete the mechanical work involved to make the metro station operational.’
