Slow and steady decrease in positive rate - Chennai positive rate goes beyond 10%

For the last 1 week, Chennai has been reporting more than 1100 Covid-19 positive cases and as a result of this, the positivity rate has gone beyond 20% now. In the past, Chennai city had a positivity rate of 7% and this caught the attention of many is a known fact.

On Saturday, 22nd August, as many as 12,105 samples were tested for this infection, and of these as many as 1294 persons were found to be affected. This is equal to a 10.7% positivity rate.

The positivity rate in Chennai on Friday was 9.9% and 12982 persons were tested and of those 1292 persons were found to be affected by Coronavirus infection.

The target of achieving a 5% positivity rate in Chennai city has been mentioned often by GCC in the past. On 8th August, Chennai had a positivity rate of 7%. As many as 14,027 persons were tested and of those, just 986 had the infection in them. Except on 14th August, Chennai city has been witnessing more than 1100 fresh Coronavirus positive cases on all other days.

Important zones such as Adyar, Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Anna Nagar, and Ambattur have been reporting the majority of new or fresh Covid-19 cases. As per an official belonging to Chennai Corporation, instructions have been issued to these zones to intensity the containment measures.

Work has been going on to bring down the positivity rate to 6% to 6.5% in Chennai at the end of August. This was revealed by Mr. G. Prakash, Chennai Corporation commissioner. There would not be a rapid decline in the positivity rate in Chennai and it would be decreasing steadily.

He threw light on the Chennai test positivity rate that has crossed 10 % from 14th August onwards. For the last 7 days till 22nd August, the growth rate of fresh or new Coronavirus cases has been 1.4%.
