In a fortnight, the traffic congestion at Pallavaram junction on the GST Road would be eased. The three lane flyover would be opened here for the public usage. The work has been completed fully and the flyover would be opened for transport only after the CM of Tamil Nadu inaugurates the flyover along with other projects belonging to the Highways Department.
It was later mentioned by some sources belonging to the state Highways Department that the main construction work on the unidirectional flyover has been completed at a cost of Rs 82.66 crores. It added that the service road on the Pallavaram junction is being laid now and it would get completed in a week`s time. The flyover would be opened to the traffic once the work gets over.
It must be remembered that the Covid-19 lockdown has brought the Pallavaram flyover works to standstill. These works would have been completed a long time back if there was no lockdown.
As per an official, it was clear that when the approach road on the Tambaram side was taken up the lockdown began in Chennai. The works started once again in June but were delayed for various reasons.
Traffic from Tambaram side would be allowed to proceed towards the airport without stopping at the Kundrathur Road, English Electricals and Old Pallavaram Sandhai Road Junctions. This would be possible by the opening of the 1.53km 3lane flyover.
In the year 2016, the construction works began and when completed the flyover with 3klanes would match the one in front of the airport.
Information collected is that to facilitate the construction the state highways department had strengthened the Old Trunk Road and took permission from the Cantonment Board and laid Kundrathur Road after removing the encroachments on either side. After the removal of encroachments, the 25feet road was widened to 40feet road.
