The TN state transport minister, Mr. M.R. Vijayabhaskar has made it clear that there would not be any increase in the bus fares. It must be taken into account that there were some rumours regarding the hike in the bus fares in TN. Out of the total fleet strength of 22,000 buses in Tamil Nadu, just 6090 buses were operated across TN on Tuesday.
The state transport minister stated that as of 1pm on Tuesday, just 6090 buses were operated with 60percent seat occupancy, 32 seats in mofussil buses and 24 seats in town buses. He added that depending on the demand, additional buses would be operated. He made his presence felt at Chennai Central bus depot and inspected the disinfection works there.
The bus crew have been provided with facemasks, hand sanitizers and gloves and Covis-19 tests would be done for the workers if they show any symptoms. It is common knowledge that the buses were asked to operate inside the districts but in some places the buses were allowed to cross the borders. This was done mainly to help the passengers avoid walking distances.
The validity of bus passes have been extended till 15th September and new monthly bus passes would be issued from Wednesday. Truth is that the monthly passes are valid for a time of 30 days from 16th of every month. Yesterday, in some buses social distancing was violated (with all seats occupied) and such issues were being looked into.
Limited patronage was witnessed yesterday in the MTC buses that began operating in Chennai after a time of 5 months. Many used private transport to reach their destinations.
On Tuesday, MTC operated just 2400 buses out of total 3600 buses and this was according to some sources. Many people were happy regarding the resumption of the MTC buses in Chennai.
