In the future, people belonging to the southern suburbs in Chennai would be able to travel to other parts of Chennai much easier.

The latest news is Chennai Metro Rail Limited or CMRL have started field surveys to acquire lands. The main objective behind this land acquisition was to build metro lines from the airport to Kilambakkam to provide connectivity for the southern suburbs.

The feasibility study on the extension line on the Washermanpet- airport corridor till Kilambakkam has been completed by CMRL. It is a known fact that a new bus terminus has been proposed at Kilambakkam.

It must be noted that the proposed corridor would be a completely elevated stretch and it would run for a total distance of 15.3kms along the GST Road with 13 stations.

For the purpose of mapping land and buildings on an alignment route, CMRL has started the land survey for the airport-Kilambakkam stretch. According to an officer belonging to CMRL, the land survey was a part of DPR to identify land needed for the project and land needed during the construction phase.

It is worthy to mention that 13 stations prised on the airport-Kilambakkam corridor are Pallavaram, Chromepet, MEPZ, Thiru V-Ka Nagar, Tambaram, Irumbuliyur, Perungalathur, RMK Nagar, Vandalur, Vandalur zoo and Kilambakkam.

Point is it would be possible for the commuters arriving at the Kilambakkam bus terminus to board metro trains to any of the transit hubs. This would happen when the metro rail gets extended up to Kilambakkam. The phase-1 of 45km metro runs in 2 corridors namely Chennai Central to St Thomas Mount and Washermenpet to airport.
