Ever since the CMRL has resumed the metro train services in the Chennai city airport metro station has been frequented by the commuters more than other metro stations. It must be noted that every day, the number of commuters travelling is between 13000 and 15000.The officials belonging to CMRL have mentioned that the airport metro station sees 1000 to 12000 commuters every day.
Recently, there has been a surge in the domestic air traffic and the truth is many flyers are using metro trains to the airport to catch their flights.
Other important metro stations like Meenambakkam and High Court stations have had an average of 700 to 1000 commuters per day. It is well known that the Chennai suburban train services haven’t resumed yet and metro trains are being used by the people travelling to northern suburbs now.
There are many commuters from Chromepet and Pallavaram and they park their vehicles at the Meenambakkam metro station. Since the parking fees at the airport metro station is higher, many park their vehicles in Meenambakkam metro station. This was brought out by a source.
The number of commuters using Thirumangalam metro station is slowly increasing now after it was opened last Wednesday. Earlier, this Thirumangalam metro station was used by many commuters belonging to places like Padi, Mogappair, Retteri etc is known.
After the airport metro station Thirumangalam metro station used to be next in the number of commuters using the station.
As per a CMRL official, the footfall at Thirumangalam metro station would improve with time. Other stations like Arumbakkam, Nehru Park and Saidapet have been having poor footfalls till now.
Now, the lockdown restrictions have been removed in Chennai and many companies have been slowly restarting their activities. It is now believed that footfall in the metro trains would improve due to this.
