Prospects for testing of the Oxford University Vaccine in Chennai before next week!

It is expected that the crucial phase of the testing of the coronavirus treatment vaccine developed by the Oxford University on human beings may commence in the Chennai Metro City before the end of the next week.

It is gathered that as the first phase of this activity, the central government has approved the proposal to invite self-volunteers to come forward for the testing.

In an effort to find a solution to end the raging coronavirus pandemic, Oxford University of Britain and the Serum Institute in India of the Bhuvaneshwar, Odisha have jointly developed a vaccine called ‘Covishield’ and the testing of this vaccine has commenced in India.

Accordingly, it is planned to conduct tests on 1600 individuals in 17 countries.

As regards the state of Tamil Nadu,  the tests are scheduled to be conducted in the Chennai Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and the Porur Ramachandra Hospital.

It has been decided to conduct testing on 100 to 120 individuals in each hospital for a total of 300 persons to be tested.

The Director of the Department of the Public Heath and Disease Prevention has been appointed as the main supervisor for this phase.

Earlier, some side-effects were detected on administering the above Covishield vaccine and hence the Oxford University had announced last week that the testing had been stopped. Subsequently, the Central Directorate of Medicinal Control had ordered the testing to be stopped.

In this situation, Oxford University allowed recommencing the testing for a few more days. Subsequently, the Central Directorate of Medicinal Control had given approval for the Serum Institute to go ahead with the testing in India.

In this situation, the Health Department Officials have informed that the testing of the Covishield vaccine may commence at the start of the next week.
