The AAI or Airport Authority of India sources have confirmed that the delayed Vellore airport is likely to become functional in this financial year.
On Monday, a meeting took place in Vellore and it was chaired by the collector Mr, Shanmuga Sundaram and Mr. R. Madhavan, Chennai AAI regional executive director made his presence felt in the meeting. It must be noted that the officials were told to expedite airport work to make it operational soon. Connecting Chennai-Vellore- Tirupathi in both the directions would be possible by this airport.
Information is that this airport was sanctioned under the central government’s UDAN-RCS (Regional Connectivity Scheme). The repeated delays by the TN state government in constructing a km long road on the airport perimeter had resulted in many issues for the airport.
The Abdullapuram-Asanambut Road has divided the airport into two and this road runs right in the middle with a runway on one side and terminal buildings on the other side.
For the purpose of joining the two sides and to make sure that the locals travelling to Anaicut and Asanambut were unaffected the idea of perimeter road was mooted more than a year back. There were some initial issues in getting land from the district administration and these glitches were sorted out.
The delays in the construction of perimeter roads have been an issue and the Erode based contractor found the going slow despite the runway extending to 850m on time. The Covid-19 infection pandemic has also led to the work going at slow speed for more than 6 months.
