The TN government had extended the lockdown till 31st of October is well known to us.
It is now said that the highly popular Marina Beach that has been closed to contain the spread of Coronavirus infection would not be reopened till 31st October. On Monday, 4th October, the GCC had informed the Madras HC about this.
It must be recalled that on 29th September a suggestion was made to consider reopening of Marina Beach to the public. Point is that the submission was made before the division bench comprising Justice Vineet Kothari and Justice M.S. Ramesh. It must be noted that the bench wanted the Marina Beach to be reopened.
Important information is the council appearing for the GCC submitted that since the lockdown brings along with it a ban on the reopening of beaches and theatres, Marina Beach would remain shut till 31st October.
There were no bidders for supplying fiberglass pushcarts for the vendors on Marina Beach and this was also informed to the bench. The tenders were called twice is known. As per the corporation counsel, the third tender would be called on 9th November.
It is now mentioned that this issue pertains to the public interest litigation moved by the Fishermen Care, fisherman rights association, in 2019. The main objective of the litigation was to increase the allowance given to the fishermen community during the ban period. The scope of the PIL was expanded by Justice Vineet Kothari by regularisation of vendors on Marina Promenade and Loop Road.
