The water managers have said that the state of Andhra Pradesh has agreed to continue water release from Kandaleru to Chennai till the month of March 2021.
It has been mentioned by a senior official belonging to PWD that in the meeting months back the counterparts in AP have agreed to release 8 tmcft of Krishna water like in 2019. He added that the water has been flowing into the Poondi reservoir from 20th September.
Initially, the rate was just 300 cusecs to 350 cusecs and it has been increased to 700 cusecs and till now 1.5tmcft has been realised. Till the NE monsoon sets in, Krishna water would be received without any issue and later AP could be asked to stop the release.
The official later pointed out that if the NE monsoon doesn’t bring sufficient rains then AP could be requested to continue the release of Krishna water. Against the total storage level of 11057 mcft, the combined storage level at the 4 reservoirs stood at 5065 mcft.
Information collected is that Poondi reservoir has a storage capacity of 1295 mcft against the total capacity of 3231 mcft. Sholavaram reservoir has got 109mcft against a total storage capacity of 1081 mcft.
Point is Red hills reservoir has got storage capacity of 2042 mcft against total of 3300 mcft and Chembarambakkam reservoir has got 1619 mcft against total capacity of 3645 mcft. It is well known that Krishna River is the fourth biggest river with respect to water inflows and is almost 1288 kms in length.
