The issues in the supply of the vegetables after the rains would lead to the 20% increase in the prices of vegetables in the Koyambedu market in Chennai. It was pointed out by some vendors that this increase would be there till December.
At present, Telangana state has been receiving plenty of rains and it is known that this market gets lots of vegetable stock from here. Rains in TN could affect the prices of some vegetables like carrots etc that are gotten from Ooty.
According to Mr. P. Sukumaran, treasurer, Koyambedu Market Merchants Association, there would be a 20% increase in the costs for a week of time. In the following weeks, the prices would go up even more.
The onions cost Rs 60 per kg and this rate would increase to Rs 80 per kg this week. It was said that carrots and ginger would touch Rs 100 per kg and other veggies like tomatoes and beans would increase to Rs 50 per kg.
There would increase in the cost between 20% and 30% of their cost and this would be for other vegetables and fruits. It was brought out by some vendors that an increase in the rates of veggies would lead to decrease in their business in the Koyambedu market.
