Cell phones to Must show SAR value

India will soon make it compulsory for cellular phone manufacturers to display the phone’s SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) value on its packaging. SAR is amount of energy absorbed by the body when exposed to radio frequency electromagnetic waves. These are waves emitted by cell phones while connecting to mobile phone towers.

Although the exact effect of these waves on the body is not known, it is widely agreed that it is safer to handle phones that have a lower SAR limit. While more expensive (and therefore perceived to be better quality) phones show their SAR rates on their packaging. ’From September 1, it will become mandatory for all handsets to display the SAR value and only phones adhering to the lower emission rates will be allowed. The phone brands that do not adhere to the norm will be rejected’, said Pankaj Mohindroo, President of the Indian Cellular Association.
