Overwhelming response to new Amma Unavagams

Over a lakh of idlis were sold on Monday alone across the Amma Unavagams that have been newly opened across the State. The low cost canteens were opened on Sunday in nine cities – Tuticorin, Vellore, Trichy, Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem, Tirupur, Erode and Tirunelveli.
Of the nine, the maximum number of idlis (15990) were sold at Tuticorin followed by 14809 at Vellore. ‘As many as 30,325 plates of sambar rice and 19,640 plates of curd rice were sold. In all the cities put together, the revenue earned during the day was approximately Rs. 3.27 lakh. The response was overwhelming everywhere as the food items were sold in one to two hours’, said an official.
