A project has been planned to link Tambaram and Velacherry in the Chennai Metro City through a new rail transport – known as Metro Light – based on the latest high-technology. The trains will run on the track on rubber tyres!
As the population in Chennai has been increasing in great numbers, the borders of the Chennai Metro City has also been expanding accordingly. The Central Government has been emphasising the state government the need for developing transport facilities. The State Government of Tami Nadu, on its part, has been executing various projects on this front to provide an integrated transport system for the Chennai Metro City including the CMRL (Chennai Metro Rail Project) partly completed and progressing on the phases of expansion, Regular surveys are being taken on dense-population areas and an analysis carried out regarding the need for transport and initiating the related project.
Meanwhile, it was panned to provide a rail link between Tambaram and Velacherry covering a distance of 15 km. The activities for checking the feasibility of this project were initiated.
In this situation, it is now planned to provide the Metro Light transport system adopting the latest High-Technology for this project. As per the attest technology, the trains will run on rubber tyres on the tracks.
The Ministry of Housing Development and Urban Affairs has released a report on the details of this proposed project. The project cost of the light transport system is estimated to be cheaper.
The Chennai Metro Rail Project Limited has already initiated activities on the preparation of the feasibility report. On the conclusion of the feasibility analysis by the Systra MVA Consultants, well-known for its expertise on City Infrastructure and transport systems, the details such as the cost of the project, the time required, and the benefits f the project have come to light. Based on this analysis report, a detailed project report will be prepared.
The Secretary of the State Government of Tami Nadu Ministry of Housing Development and Urban Affairs, Durgashankar Mishra shared in this regard:
“The proposed Metro Neo Project will provide the same high safety standards as the Metro Rail System and this will be lighter and smaller as compared to the Metro Rail. This would provide for a safe, comfortable, punctual, and cheaper mode of transport. The project cost will also be considerably less! These light trains will run mostly on road-levels and fenced routes.
As per the details of the report regarding this light train project, these trains will carry up to a load of 12 tons. In other terms, it can take the load of 2000 to 15000 passengers. The train coaches and the railway stations on this route will have the required latest facilities!”
