Following the incident in which a woman was gored by a stray cow, the Chennai Corporation has floated tenders to avail vehicles that would help impound stray cattle on the streets of the city. According to officials, stray cattle were a hindrance to residents. They were a nuisance that took up space on pavements and hindered traffic.
The Corporation currently has five vehicles to do the needful, but they say they need more to do an effective job. The impounded cattle’s owner will need to par Rs. 1550 per head for its return. Unclaimed cattle will be taken care of by the Blue Cross of India.
‘Over the last five years, action had been taken against around 5,000 people, for allowing their cattle on the roads… The city currently accommodates over 1 lakh cattle, most of which are in the recently-added zones of Sholinganallur, Madhavaram and Tiruvottiyur among others’, said an official.
