12407.27 hectares have been added to what is currently Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary near Chennai. The Sanctuary was set up in 1967 and was initially 17.26 sq. km. The extra area has been taken from the Great Vedaranyam swamp in Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Thajavur districts.
The move is seen as a way to restore the visits of migratory birds from the Arctic and Central Asia. ‘The addition will bring the entire area under the protection of the forest department. So far, the revenue wing held the vast tracts of swamp areas and very little could be done for the migratory birds. Now, habitat improvement will be the priority’, said an official.
