Residents and small hotel owners alike are facing the heat through soaring vegetable prices. On Wednesday, shops in Tiruvanmiyur were selling beans for as high as Rs. 90 a kilo. A kilogram of tomatoes costs Rs. 65. According to reports, the last time the prices were ‘reasonable’ was in April when beans was sold at Rs. 20 per kg and tomatoes at Rs. 12 per kg. Shop owners and wholesalers blame the hot weather for the rise in prices.

‘We do not have storage facilities. Excessive summer heat and poor arrivals are keeping prices very high’, said a wholesaler in Koyambedu.
