A block of the government central press in Mint caught fire and was completely destroyed shortly after. An electrical short circuit is said to be the cause of the fire.
‘The block housed to-be-recycled material. The fire caused a loss of property that could run into lakhs. It is a place where waste material is stored. No employee of the printing press was present in the block at the time. The building had faulty electrical wiring… The power connection was disconnected six months ago in the block where waste papers were dumped. The government central press functioned under the control of the stationery and printing department. The press prints standardized forms, registers, department manuals, birth and death certificates, community certificates and change of name gazettes. The chief minister`s speech, budget speech, policy notes and demands of all departments in the state secretariat, Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission bulletins, election commission forms, notifications and ballot papers, top secret works like question papers are all printed here’, said a source.
