By the evening of Wednesday, 25th November 2020, cyclone Nivar is expected to make landfall.
To deal with the aftermath of this cyclone, all the precautionary steps like manpower, machineries and facilities have been kept ready. This was mentioned by GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation.
At the Ripon buildings, Mr. S.P. Velumani, minister for municipal administration was busy flagging off the mobile integrated command and control centre of the corporation. Under the Smart City Project, the mobile command centre was procured is well known. This mobile command centre would play an important role in handling information from multiple agencies.
This included rainfall data, flood level monitoring, environmental sensors, smart pole, solid waste management and parking management system etc. It would be possible to monitor information on the water stagnation in the subways and in the low lying places in Chennai city by means of surveillance cameras.
Later, precautionary steps could be taken when it reaches the mouth of the storm water drains or SWD. This was according to Mr. Velumani. By means of smart poles, the centre would be able to monitor the rainfall recorded in various parts of Chennai city.
Following the onset of NE monsoon, Chennai city received 38.7cm rains and in the last 24 hours Chennai received 5.9cm rains. At the Chennai Corporation headquarters, a 24/7 control room has been set up. Two vehicle mounted saws for clearing roads:
The minister Mr. Velumani later highlighted that the corporation has got two vehicle mounted saws and 360 handheld diesel based and petrol- powered saws and 11 electric powered saws to remove the fallen branches and uprooted trees. At the zonal offices, there are as many as 18 high tower lights on standby.
At 109 locations in the city, boats have been stationed to rescue people from the low lying places. He threw light on the 176 relief centres plus on the 44 fixed and mobile medical teams. The food would be supplied to the affected people through Amma Canteens and the drinking water would be supplied through 50 Amma Drinking Water Centres.
There are 570 motor pumps fitted with 5 hp, 7.5 hp and 10hp motors and these would be used to pump out water from the low lying places in the Chennai city. For the sake of monitoring electric poles, hanging cables and electric outlets, teams have been formed.
