In the future, if you visit the Marina Beach in Chennai, you would be surprised about the absence of book shops, footwear shops, cloth shops, petty shops etc.
Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC has been putting huge efforts to beautify the highly popular Marina Beach in Chennai. As a part of this beautification programme, GCC has finalised its plans in choosing the vendors. The GCC has taken a decision now and that is only those vendors selling food items like snacks, beverages and fancy items would be allowed to set up their shops.
For those vendors who want to set up their shops at this beach, the civic body has begun the distribution of applications. The GCC had issued an order regarding what shops must be there at this beach.
Shops that have no relation to the beach such as book shops, cloth shops, footwear shops, petty shops, electronic items shops, mobile phone shops, optical, photo studios, tattoo parlours etc would not be allowed. This has been brought out by the order from the Chennai Corporation.
Creating balance between existing and new vendors:
The order clearly pointed out that shops selling cold drinks plus others like fancy items, food items and snacks etc would only be allowed in the Marina Beach. According to the order from the Madras HC, the TN government has decided to procure 900 smart carts. Important piece of information is that out of 900 smart carts 60percent would be allotted to the already present vendors and the rest 40percent would be allotted to those vendors who do not run shops at the beach now. This move would create a balance between the existing and new vendors.
Ripon Buildings was busy with people as many vendors having their shops on the roads across the city of Chennai gathered in large numbers to collect the application after the issue of application started.
It was mentioned by a woman running a bangle shop at Mettupalayam that she had come to get the application for running a shop at the Marina Beach. Point to note is that the filled in applications must be sent from 21st December to 26th December except 25th December. On 8th January, finalisation of the application would be carried out and then the carts would be allocated.
The Chennai corporation commissioner, Mr. G. Prakash hinted that a reading area would be created in the beach for those who want to sit and read books etc
