An official from the Southern Railway has informed that an additional 86 electric trains would be introduced from today (Monday, 21st December) for the residents of the Chennai Metro City and its suburbs, essentially for employees performing essential duties.
After the subsequent phases of lockdown conditions in the state over the last 8 months (as a preventive measure against the spread of the raging coronavirus pandemic), special trains are being operated to various places. The suburban electric trains are being operated routes for the government workers and other categories including women and children.
In this regard, while 40 trains were operated during the 1st phase of relaxation, it was increased to 120 in the subsequent phase. After a few days, this was further increased from 120 to 150. It was announced that the women and children may travel and the number of trains operated increased to 320.
In this scenario, with the main objective to reduce the crowd congestion and to prevent the coronavirus spread, the number of trains in the suburban electric rate is being increased again from today (Monday, 21st December).
An official from Southern Railways shared regarding this:
“320 trains are being operated presently in the Chennai Metro City suburban electric train route. In this situation, for the facility of the travelling public as well as to reduce the crowd congestion, the number of trains operated is being increased again by 86! This would mean that 406 trains are operated daily. Also, activities have been undertaken to resume normal services.”
