Information gathered is that the restriction on allowing only those engaged in the essential services to travel in the suburban trains in Chennai would be there in the peak hours.

On Tuesday, an official statement from the Southern Railways or SR stated that the general public would be allowed to travel in the suburban trains from the early hours till 7am, 9:30 till 4:30 pm and from 7pm till the closing hours. The statement also clearly mentioned that during the general public would be allowed to travel after following Covid-19 guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Recently, the Southern Railways gave permission to the women passengers on EMU during the non-peak hours is well known.

Workmen special trains and various phases of relaxations:
It must not be forgotten that in the initial stages of Coronavirus pandemic, SR was just running sub-urban trains for the sake of railway employees as workmen special in the Chennai region.

The number of fresh or new Covid-19 cases has been decreasing in Chennai now and as a result of this the SR has been relaxing the restrictions in phases. Truth is that the SR has been granting relaxations in the pattern of train services in the suburban sector.

The employees working in the organisations rendering essential services were given permission to travel by suburban trains and this was in the phase 1 of the relaxation. In the second phase, women passengers were given permission to travel in the suburban trains in the non-peak hours. In this phase 3 relaxation, the general public has been allowed to travel in the suburban trains in the non-peak hours. As many as 410 trains have been operated by the southern railways now. It must be noted that this is 65% of normal train operation in the suburban sector.
