The new strain has created huge fear now in the minds of the people all over the world. Some passengers who came from the UK to Chennai have tested positive for Coronavirus. The surveillance on the passengers has been tightened and many measures are being taken to identify the new strain as fast as possible. Amidst all these, the test positivity rate or TPR has gone below 3percent in Chennai city. This has brought some relief for the health experts and others.
The Chennai Corporation has released data and it was clear that the test positivity rate or TPR (that is percentage of samples that return positive and a measure on the infection spread) has come down below 3% in the last few days in Chennai. In the months of May and June the TPR in Chennai was in the range between 25% and 30% on many days. The TPR was at 2.4% on Thursday in Chennai.
Wear facemasks compulsorily even now:
It has been mentioned by the health experts that the testing for Covid-19 must be at a limit where TPR is 5%. As per an official belonging to GCC, though the spread of Covid-19 infection has reduced in Chennai city the residents must wear face masks and maintain physical distancing compulsorily.
Increase in the number of tests:
On Thursday, the civic body was very busy testing more than 12000 persons for the first time since the middle of October month. Information collected by GCC was testing 11,000 persons per day before Thursday. On the morning of Thursday, the number of active cases dropped to less than 3000 in Chennai. Currently, 4 zones (Tiruvottiyur zone, Manali zone, Madhavaram zone and Sholinganallur zone) out of 15 GCC zones have less than 100 active cases. At present, the maximum number of active Covid-19 cases is present in the Adyar zone and it is 417.
Adyar zone is followed by the Kodambakkam zone that has 397 active cases and Anna Nagar zone with 330 active cases.
In the northern Chennai region, zones like Tondiarpet and Royapuram have got 119 and 203 active cases respectively. It must be recalled that these zones were once the hotspots in the city of Chennai in the peak months.
The GCC officials have given hope now and have said that the positive cases are not high among the UK returned passengers to Chennai. Truth is that the majority of the samples were tested negative for Covid-19 infection.
