The District Collector of Thiruvannamalai, Sandeep Nanduri, has appealed to the devotees and the pubic NOT to visit Thiruvannamalai to undertake Girivalam on the Full Moon Day as per tradition.
As per the conventional Hindu Philosophy/tradition, there are 5 basic elements - the Sky (open space), the Earth, Water, Fire, and the Wind. Lord Shiva, one of the 3 Gods (Vishnu, Siva and Brahma) has 5 dedicated temples representing the above 5 elements in the state of Tami Nadu.
The hugely famous Lord Arunachaleswarar Tempe in Thiruvannamalai represents the Lord Siva in the form of Fire. On the Full Moon Days occurring each month, not only the local devotees but also devotees from other Tami Nadu districts as well as from other States undertake the `Girivalam` - a walk around the bottom of the temple praying the Lord – on the Full |Moon Days occurring each month!
However, at present, there is a situation where lockdown is on imposition until 31st December as a preventive measure against the spread of the raging coronavirus as per the National Disaster Management Act.
