On Wednesday, 30th December 2020, the minister for municipal administration Mr, S.P. Velumani announced GCC plans to increase the number of smart parking slots to 12,000. This attracted the attention of many.

Khader Nawaz Khan Road in Nungambakkam in Chennai is a very busy place. The GCC has got plans to introduce premium smart parking spaces here at the cost of Rs 40 per hour.

The cost for the smart parking space in other places like Anna Nagar Second Avenue, Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue would be Rs 20 per hour. In places like Besant Nagar, T. Nagar, Purasawalkam and George Town in Chennai, the smart parking spaces would be increased. It must be taken into account that currently there are 3000 smart spaces. In the near future, roads in the vicinity of NSC Bose Road would get smart parking spaces also.

The officials have pointed out that as many as 300 out of 471 bus routes in Chennai would have smart parking spaces.

Improvement in the on street parking:
For the sake of improving the on street parking in the congested neighbourhoods, the GCC has implemented the parking management system. Truth is that the overall functioning of the streets in Chennai city would get improved by the optimum use of available parking space. The fatalities and injuries would be brought down by disciplined parking. The various e-payment options facilitated by the apps could be used to pay the parking fees.

GCC Smart Parking Mobile App:
Before arriving at the place, a motorist would be able to book a parking space through GCC Smart Parking mobile app. The app with inbuilt Google Maps would navigate the user to the parking space lot.

The information about the vehicles would be captured by the number plate recognition cameras. Then, e-receipts would be generated automatically in the name of the user.  For ensuring a friendly smart parking space, the project focuses on cashless transaction and IT enabled systems with the dedicated mobile applications, websites and other hybrid facilities.

It is said that this system would be integrated with multi-level car parking and other of-street parking facilities. The bicycles would have a separate parking space. This was as per an official belonging to the GCC. The official then threw light on the prepaid system that was on cards. This system would provide quality parking space and not on the profit making.
