On the request of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), Southern Railways will extend the platforms of the St. Thomas Mount stations and long distance trains will stop at the station soon.
The request comes in the wake of the CMRL’s plan to make the St. Thomas Mount Station into a transit hub where the MRTS, metro rail, suburban trains and buses all converge. The trains will stop at the Station will be en route to Egmore. These are trains from Madurai, Tuticorin, Rameswaram, Kanyakumari among others.
‘The platform has to be extended to handle 24-coach trains and a link track laid. The existing platforms can take only 22-coach trains. Discussions are on with metro rail about the work. There is also a plan to share the cost with metro rail. A final decision will be taken soon’, said a railway official.
