A study conducted by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has shown that Chennai is definitely getting hotter. According to the study, in the 42 years between 1969 and 1990, there were equal number of hot days and cold days – temperature above 40 degrees Celsius is considered hot and below 19 degrees Celsius is considered cold. However, in the last 21 years, there have been more hot than cold days – 220 to 58.
‘The number of hot days has gone up by 27% and the cold days down by 69% over the last four decades. Rapid urbanisation, increase in vehicular population and effects of global warming (are) the reasons for the rise in the city`s average temperature’, says the study.
