If you have gone to localities like Saidapet, Triplicane, Vyasarpadi, Virugambakkam, Koyambedu and Nanganallur etc, then you might have come across cows and buffaloes roaming on the streets and eating from garbage bins. The menace of cows and buffaloes has been making the lives of many residents difficult in these places.

The people belonging to the above said localities have given complaints about the stray cattle issue but no action has been taken. Now, the residents want the stray cattle to be shifted to places outside the Chennai limits.

There are many narrow lanes in Triplicane and in the past 2 weeks of time atleast 4 persons were injured badly by the stray cattle there. Recently, one such incident took place at the religious procession and it caught the attention of many. A resident belonging to Triplicane expressed his views about the stray cattle. He spoke about how Mada Street has got around 150 cows creating many issues for the public. He mentioned that Nagoji Street has got a layer of cow dung over tar and how this has been creating issues for many.

It must be recalled that a few years back, GCC tried to move the stray cattle to the MRTS track but it was not successful. Two important roads like Pycrofts road and Venkatarangam Pillai Street have also got many stray cattle.

In Vyasarpadi, two wheelers get affected by these stray cattle as they roam in the dark streets that have got poor illumination. This was pointed out by a resident. Truth is that a long time back the Corporation Commissioner took efforts to remove the cattle sheds that were inside the city limits but his efforts were unsuccessful.

A resident belonging to west Saidapet mentioned that cows usually lie down on the roads forcing the two wheelers to go around them. The kids here are scared due to these cows on the roads. He concluded that the complaints given by the residents regarding stray cattle go unheeded. It must be noted in Virugambakkam the buffaloes roam freely around Kaliamman Koil Street and on the roads around Koyambedu vegetable market etc.

The number of heads of cattles impounded by the Chennai Corporation had reduced from 650 in 2019-20 to 210 as of December2020. This was because of the restrictions imposed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. In 2020, the fine collected from the cattle owners has decreased from Rs 65 lakhs to Rs 18.5lakhs.
